Gatherings and sharing in the gardens of La Pirogue !

28 juin 2013

On 17th June, guests at the 4-star Hôtel La Pirogue in Mauritius had the opportunity to attend a wonderful gathering focussing on literature.

Literary gatherings at La Pirogue

In the presence of Dr. Karl Mootoosamy, the Director of the MTPA (Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority), a literary gathering, taking everyone on their travels and crossing frontiers, held in the gardens of the 4-star Hôtel La Pirogue in Mauritius. Thus, taking a detour from the pathways of the magnificent coconut plantation at this authentic Mauritian resort, the guests present were able to find out more about major names in French literature. After an excellent breakfast in the main Thatches restaurant, and after some watersports on the shores of the amazing white sandy beach, the guests at the Hôtel La Pirogue were able to attend the gathering, which began at 11:30 a.m. in the shade of the towering coconut palms.

JMG Le Clézio at La Pirogue

Conversations were many amongst the prestigious participants in the gathering, organised at the La Pirogue resort in Mauritius. In fact, a few moments sharing brought together J.M.G. Le Clézio, Dr. Issa Asgarally and Martha van der Drift. J.M.G. Le Clézio is the world famous author of more than 40 books including Le Chercheur d’Or, Voyage à Rodrigues, La Quarantaine, Révolutions, L’Africain and Ritournelle de la Faim, not to mention Histoires du Pied and other incredible works. In 2008, whilst Ritournelle de la Faim had just been published, J.M.G. Le Clézio received the Nobel Prize for Literature and was made an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur on 1st January 2009. Dr. Issa Asgarally is a Doctor of Linguistics and the author of more than 10 books including L’interculturel ou la Guerre (with a preface by J.M.G. Le Clézio), Comme un Roman sans Fin & autres Textes, Des Livres & des Idées, L’île Maurice des Cultures and Une Brève Histoire du Livre. He teaches at the Mauritius Institute of Education. Martha van der Drift came from the University of North Carolina in the United States, where she is a French literary researcher.

All of the participants and listeners had a wonderful time at the gathering, especially J.M.G. Le Clézio, who had stayed at the 4-star Hôtel La Pirogue since 14th June and had thus been able to make the most of the hospitality on offer at this icon of Mauritian hostelry.
